International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES), an international nonprofit that provides assistance and support for elections in new and emerging democracies, relocated to a new office outside of Washington, DC. Their former space was comprised of a mostly closed environment with no way-finding or natural light. IFES sought to create a space that drew in natural light, promoted staff interaction, and provided efficient and flexible work spaces.
The FOX Architects team designed a large café and positioned it along the window line; drawing in natural light into the space while also providing a connection with nature, and a view of the National Mall and Ronald Reagan National Airport. While the café provides an inviting space for meetings, staff events, and social interaction, the workspace is made up of small neighborhoods of open work bays clustered with adjacent private offices —all with a direct line of sight to the outdoors.
International Foundation for Electoral Systems’ new office space provides ample daylighting and views to the outside, encourages collaboration, and offers efficient and flexible workspaces for its staff. The new environment is open and transparent, and branded to reflect IFES’ culture and vision.
