Representing the U.S. pulp, paper, packaging, and wood products industry, AF&PA’s new space is a physical embodiment of its mission and the materials its members produce. Sustainability is woven throughout the space, reinforcing AF&PA’s commitment to environmental stewardship.
Designing for the American Forest & Paper Association meant capturing the breadth of its member products without overwhelming the space. The team approached this as an exercise in balance—celebrating variety while maintaining clean, cohesive visual language. Another key challenge was infusing openness and light into a layout heavily driven by private offices. The team had to get inventive, finding subtle yet impactful ways to introduce brightness, airiness, and flow into an otherwise compartmentalized program.
Extensive use of clear glazing throughout the space allows daylight to penetrate deep into the interior, with minimal interruption from the perimeter offices. A branded graphic band was applied at eye level to provide identity and necessary visual privacy without compromising light transmission. Curvilinear forms were strategically introduced to soften rigid geometries and foster a sense of spatial continuity and openness. Environmental graphics and wayfinding were not treated as overlays, but rather integrated into the architectural language, reinforcing both brand presence and intuitive navigation.
The transformation of the AF&PA office has had a significant impact on the organization’s day-to-day operations and internal culture. The new space fosters greater connectivity and transparency, encouraging collaboration while still supporting the need for focused, individual work. Abundant natural light and a more fluid spatial layout have enhanced overall well-being and productivity. By embedding brand identity into the architecture and aligning the design with the diversity of its membership, the space now serves as a physical embodiment of the organization’s mission—forward-thinking, inclusive, and adaptive. Thoughtful material choices and efficient planning reflect AF&PA’s deep-rooted commitment to sustainability, reinforcing its role as a champion of responsible forestry and resource stewardship. The result is a workplace that not only elevates the experience of staff and visitors alike but also positions AF&PA as a leader in innovation within its industry.
