National Rural Utilities Cooperative Finance Corp.

Location: Loudoun County, VA
Project Size: 120,000 SF

The design services began in 2006 for this privately owned financial cooperative. The project included a relocation of the existing headquarters of the National Rural Utilities Cooperative Finance Corp. (NRUCFC) to a new, fully developed site in Loudoun County, VA. The goal was to improve internal connectivity among the executives and staff in an office space private enough for the confidential financial information the organization handles daily. NRUCFC also needed  a comfortable, welcoming space for visitors. To achieve these goals, the overall design concept, inspired by the organization’s CEO, was a “Main Street to Wall Street” theme with offices, conference rooms and pantries, creating crossroads to encourage interaction between the staff and senior executives.

The solution was to design the client’s workspace from the inside out, working in conjunction with the base building architect to create a comprehensive and cohesive building footprint. A three-story atrium was designed with unobstructed outdoor views. Radiant heating and cooling systems were integrated under the atrium floor. In addition, senior-executive offices were designed to feature full glass fronts, which overlook the atrium for a sense of connectivity to the rest of the organization.

This project engaged the integrated project delivery (IPD) method and was designed with building information modeling (BIM) using a combination of tools, including Revit®.
