International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES)
The International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) works with election management bodies around the world to support citizen’s rights to participate in a free and fair election. Having recently relocated to Crystal City, IFES applied democracy throughout the design process to create a new transparent and branded space.
IFES’ former space was comprised of mostly closed environment and no way-finding or natural light. IFES sought to create a space that drew in natural light, promoted collaboration, and provided efficient and flexible work spaces. One of the design features of the space is the large café, which provides space for meetings, staff events, and social interaction. Positioned along the window line, natural light permeates the space providing a connection with nature with a view of the Monuments and National airport.
As with the large café the workplace was designed to maximize natural light. The workplace is made up of small neighborhoods, comprised of open work bays and clusters of adjoining private offices - supporting the client’s culture and work principles. All work spaces have direct line of sight to the outside and visual connection to natural light.
