FOX Designs Largest Active Green Wall in the DC Metro Region

May 17, 2017

FOX Architects, in partnership with Greenstreet GreenWalls, and AgroSci, Inc. designed and installed a state-of-the art air-purifying living wall, the largest active green wall in the greater Washington region and the second largest in the country. The living wall is located inside The Towers at 1000 Wilson Boulevard in Arlington, VA.

Monday Properties commissioned FOX to program a solution that made the first impression of The Towers from the street a lasting one. The solution demanded an effective use of space that directed foot-traffic through The Towers and into Freedom Park.

Inspired by the gardens and trees of the park, the concept of “bringing the outside in” took hold. A dramatic green wall visible from the street would make the lobby a point of interest in the community and connect the lobby to the outside.

The 780 sf. ft. green wall goes beyond aesthetics and creates a healthier and more welcoming space. The 2,663-plant green wall has the air-purifying capacity of 888 cu. ft. per minute. This equates to 1,278,240 cu. sf of air per day (enough to purify the U.S. Capitol rotunda!) while running at a fraction of the cost of traditional HVAC systems. This and other building improvements, including new furniture throughout the public space and entrance lobbies, increases the marketing potential for future tenants.

Owned and operated by Monday Properties, a leading national real estate investment firm, The Towers new green wall is a perfect complement to their ongoing commitment to sustainable design and places Monday Properties at the forefront of revolutionizing Rosslyn.
